Understanding Acne At All Levels

When it comes to acne there are different forms and infections that can lead to a breakout. We are going to take a look at some common terminology used that is related to acne so you better understand this skin condition. Remember that finding a successful treatment is all about understanding the inter-workings of the infection. We have a couple examples for you below and you can continue to read the entire list at this skin care resource.

Whiteheads And Blackheads
When most people think about blackheads they believe it is dirt underneath the skin. This is not correct at all. In fact, blackheads are what are referred to as clogs in the skin’s pores or an acne plug. It is made of both sebum and dead skin cells that are blocking the opening of the pore. The darker black color is a result of the sebum getting oxidized. When it comes to whiteheads most people think this is when the pimple turns white on the top and when most people try to pop them. This is not correct either. Whiteheads are simply the same thing as blackheads except the pore is actually closed off to any oxidation. This makes the white color remain instead of turning it black.

Dark Spots
These are spots on the skin where there is a darker pigmentation after an acne lesion is healed. Technically speaking these are called hyperpigmentation or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is a result of an inflammation that makes the body produce too much melanin and changes the color of the skin.
