Post Exercise Hydration: Traditional Water or New Sports Drink

After a long, intense workout you need to re-hydrate your body and fuel your muscles for protein synthesis. This is just common knowledge in the fitness world. However, with so many post-exercise sports drinks on the market, it’s hard not to be tempted from your usual water hydration routine. The makers say they are good for you, but are they really?

These sports drinks are a combination of sugars, calories, and electrolytes. The latter are essential for the cells of the body to continue to work properly. Electrolytes are the big sellers when it comes to energy and sports drinks. However, the truth is that when people typically exercise they only lose a few from their body. This can be replenished easily with some water and eating healthy food.

But, on the contrary for those who are working out intensely and in a very warm environment tend to lose more of these electrolytes than the typical person. This is too much to be replenished with a simple glass or two of water. So if you endure a tough workout you may want to opt for sports drinks to help boost your electrolytes. Keep in mind, that you don’t need to have them prior to exercise as you have enough electrolytes. They should be solely used post-exercise and in small amounts.
