Warts are caused by an infection called human papillomavirus or HPV for short. There are currently more than one hundred different strains identified and recognized by the medical community. Depending on the particular strain you become infected with, will depend on which types of warts you will see develop on your skin. It’s important to know that warts can show on all parts of the human body. These include inside the mouth, on the genitals, on the skin, and on the rectal area. The most common types of HPV that people get infected with cause warts on the fingers and hands.
You can pass warts to another person if you are currently containing the HPV infection. This usually happens from direct contact with something that has the virus on it due to the infected person using it. This means things like washcloths, towels, and other household items. Genital warts are their own type of warts in the sense they are contracted much differently than the other types you can get. They are for starters very contagious. They can be passed via vaginal, anal, or oral sex. If you are having sex with someone that is infected with genital warts using protection is imperative to preventing yourself from getting the infection. For women, warts can grow on the cervix and inside the vagina.
